Turning Your Irrigation Off Could Be Costly
The quick answer to the question is no. We have just experienced an extremely dry, late spring/early summer season. It is during periods like this that we realize how indispensable an irrigation system can be in Florida. When the rainy season begins, many are tempted to completely turn off their systems. After all, who doesn’t want to conserve water and save money? Less water also means the grass grows slower, which means less mowing, less grass clippings, and less weeds (especially our water loving dollar weed.)
However, there can be some very costly results from shutting down your system completely. If the system is not used periodically, the heads can become clogged and or covered with grass, preventing them from popping up when you reactivate the system. Instead of turning your irrigation system off, we recommend reducing the number of days and the amount of time it runs.
So What Should You Do?
Instead of running your system two days a week, run it only once. Instead of running it 25-45 minutes, set the timer to only 5-10 minutes. This will flush the system, preventing the heads from becoming clogged, and helping to avoid an expensive repair bill later. The best of both worlds: Reduce your water cost and prevent maintenance costs.
